A Place to Belong, at Your Own Pace

Planning a visit should feel peaceful, not overwhelming. Our Disabilities Ministry is here to help every individual and family feel welcomed, supported, and comfortable from the moment they arrive. Through simple guides, photos, and helpful expectations, we want to make VCKC a place where everyone can confidently say: “I can see myself here.”

Confidence Starts with Knowing What to Expect

Every person experiences new environments differently, and having a clearer picture of what a visit may look and feel like can make all the difference. This guide is designed to provide gentle familiarity before arriving at Vineyard Church KC by walking through spaces, routines, and moments someone may encounter during a service. Our hope is to create an experience that feels accessible, supportive, and welcoming for every guest and every family.

WHAT TO EXPECT: INCLUSIVE SOCIAL STORY

ARRIVING AT CHURCH

When I arrive at Vineyard Church KC, I will see the church building and the parking lot. There are accessible parking spaces near the doors. I can park in any spot that feels comfortable for me. If I need help getting inside, I can ask a volunteer or someone I came with.

WALKING TOWARD THE ENTRANCE

As I walk toward the entrance, I may see greeters. They usually smile and say hello. If I don’t feel like talking or looking at them, that’s OK. I can walk in however I feel most comfortable. I can take my time. I don’t have to rush.

ENTERING THE LOBBY

When I walk into the lobby, I may see people talking, walking, or checking in their kids. I might hear music or notice different sounds. If the sounds feel too loud, I can ask for earplugs, take a deep breath, or move to a quieter spot. There are volunteers nearby who can help me find where to go.

IF I AM GOING TO KIDS MINISTRY

If I am going to Kids Ministry, I will check in with my family or a trusted adult. A sticker will print with my name on it. The adult with me will get a matching sticker so they can pick me up later. A volunteer can help if we need it. A volunteer may walk with us to my room. The hallways might have bright signs and decorations. I can hold someone’s hand, ask for quiet, or walk slowly if I want to. My room might have toys, crafts, music, a Bible story, or a calm area. I don’t have to join every activity. It’s OK if I want to watch or take a break. The leaders are trained to help kids with different needs.

IF I AM GOING TO THE WORSHIP CENTER

If I go to the Worship Center, I can sit anywhere I want. I can choose a seat close to the front or somewhere quiet. When the music starts, some people stand and sing. I can sit, stand, listen, wear earplugs, or hold a comfort item. I can step out if I need a break. All choices are OK.

TEACHING TIME

After the music, a pastor will speak from the stage. There will be screens showing what is being talked about. I can listen, take notes, move quietly, or step out for a break. I don’t have to participate unless I want to.

COMMUNION & PRAYER

Sometimes there is communion or prayer time. I do not have to participate. I can stay in my seat and watch if I want to.

TAKING A BREAK

If I feel overwhelmed, I can go to the lobby, use a quiet space, take deep breaths, or take a sensory break. Breaks are always allowed.

LEAVING THE SERVICE

When the service is over, people will walk out of the room. I can leave right away or wait until the crowd is smaller.

PICKING UP KIDS FROM KIDS MINISTRY

If I was in Kids Ministry, the adult who checked me in will bring their sticker. A volunteer will match the numbers and then I can go with them. If something went well or if I needed help, a volunteer might share that with the adult so they know how to support me.

ACCESSIBILITY FEATURES AT VINEYARD CHURCH KC

Vineyard Church KC has many features to help me feel comfortable: accessible parking, wheelchair-accessible entrances, earplugs, sensory tools, quiet spaces, visual schedules, trained volunteers, accessible restrooms, seating adjustments, and the option for a tour before Sunday.

WHEN I LEAVE

When it’s time to go home, I can feel proud of myself for visiting. I can come back whenever I want. Vineyard Church KC is happy to see me.
